A leading engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join its growing geoenvironmental capability within the London team. This is a key hire within a developing discipline, offering the opportunity to take a leading technical and client-facing role while supporting the expansion of a high-performing geotechnical function.

This position sits at the intersection of geotechnical engineering and contaminated land consultancy, with a strong emphasis on technical leadership, project delivery, and client engagement across a diverse portfolio of infrastructure and development projects.

The Opportunity

You will take ownership of complex geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects, acting as a senior technical lead and trusted advisor to clients. The role will involve delivering high-quality ground engineering solutions while supporting the development of the wider team and capability.

At Principal level, you will also contribute to strategic growth, mentoring junior engineers, and supporting business development initiatives within the discipline.

This is a highly varied role combining hands-on technical delivery with leadership and client-facing responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and deliver geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects across multiple sectors
Oversee site investigations, ground risk assessments, and interpretative reporting
Provide technical input into geotechnical design and contaminated land assessments
Act as a senior point of contact for clients and project stakeholders
Manage project delivery, ensuring quality, budget, and programme targets are met
Support and mentor junior and mid-level engineers within the team
Contribute to bid preparation, proposals, and client development activities
Liaise with regulators, contractors, and multidisciplinary design teams
Ensure compliance with UK geotechnical standards and industry best practice
Support strategic development of the geoenvironmental capability
About You

You will ideally have:

Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, or related discipline
8–18+ years’ experience in geotechnical and/or contaminated land consultancy
Strong consultancy background delivering UK-based ground engineering projects
Chartered status (CGeol, CEng or equivalent) preferred or working towards
Proven experience managing clients and leading project delivery
Strong technical report writing and review capability
Experience mentoring or supervising junior engineers
