My client is a well-established consultancy operating across the built and natural environment, with a strong and growing pipeline of work across infrastructure, transport, water, and development sectors.

Due to continued growth and project demand, my client is  looking to appoint a Principal Ecologist to play a key role in leading project delivery and supporting the expansion of their London-based ecology team.

The Role


This is a senior, leadership-focused position where you will take ownership of projects from tender through to completion, working across both public and private sector developments.

Key responsibilities include:

Leading and delivering a range of ecological projects from bid stage through to completion
Managing surveys, data analysis, reporting, and client engagement
Overseeing ecological inputs within multidisciplinary project teams
Applying for and managing protected species mitigation licences
Acting as a key point of contact for clients, stakeholders, and regulators
Managing project budgets, programmes, and team utilisation
Mentoring and supporting junior team members
Supporting business development and contributing to bids
Playing a key role in growing the London ecology team


Project exposure includes:

Infrastructure and transport schemes
Residential and mixed-use development
Habitat creation and biodiversity enhancement projects

    About You
    Essential

  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Management, or a related discipline
    Significant experience within a UK ecological consultancy
    Strong knowledge of UK habitats, protected species, and legislation
    Proven experience managing projects and delivering high-quality outputs
    Experience mentoring or managing junior team members
    Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
    Full UK driving licence
    Desirable
    Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (MCIEEM or working towards)
    Protected species licences
    Experience with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
    GIS capability
    Chartered Ecologist (or working towards)
