My client is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Specialist to join their team and to help support their growing pool of clients and innovative projects.

The successful candidate will play a key role in managing and overseeing planning projects, with a particular focus on biodiversity conservation and enhancement. This position requires a deep understanding of biodiversity legislation, the Statutory Metric, policies, and best practices, as well as proven experience in liaising with government bodies such as DEFRA, Natural England, and Local Planning Authorities.

Responsibilities & Tasks

·         Lead and manage planning projects with a specific focus on achieving Biodiversity Net Gain.

·         Provide expert advice and guidance on biodiversity conservation and enhancement measures to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders.

·         Conduct assessments, surveys, and impact evaluations to inform planning decisions and mitigation strategies.

·         Working as part of the in-house ecology team to develop and implement Biodiversity Net Gain strategies and action plans in accordance with relevant legislation, metrics, policies, and guidelines. Liaise with government bodies, including DEFRA and Natural England, to ensure compliance with biodiversity regulations and secure necessary permits or approvals.

·         Establish and maintain positive relationships with Local Planning Authorities, conservation organisations, Wildlife Trusts and other relevant stakeholders.

·         Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including ecologists, landscape architects, and engineers, to integrate biodiversity considerations into planning proposals.

·         Stay abreast of emerging trends, research, and developments in biodiversity conservation and planning policy to inform decision-making and best practices.

·         Prepare and present reports including Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans and Biodiversity Gain Plans, presentations, and proposals to clients, regulatory bodies, and community groups as required.

·         Mentor and support junior staff members in understanding and implementing biodiversity related planning processes and requirements.

Ideally You Will Have The Following

·         Bachelor's or Master's degree in Planning, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field.

·         Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental planning.

·         In-depth knowledge of biodiversity legislation, policies, and guidelines, including relevant national and local planning policies.

·         Proven track record of successfully managing planning projects with a focus on biodiversity, including experience in preparing and implementing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) plans.

·         Strong understanding of ecological principles and methodologies, including habitat assessment, species surveys, and ecological impact assessment.

·         Experience in engaging with government bodies such as DEFRA, Natural England, and Local Planning Authorities, with established contacts and relationships.

·         Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences effectively.

·         Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess and mitigate biodiversity impacts within the planning context.

·         Proficiency in relevant software and tools used in planning and biodiversity assessment, such as the Statutory Metric, GIS, ecological modelling software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
